Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
We are located in Eastern Iowa in the Iowa City area. We are home to the University of Iowa and close to community colleges. There are also a number of part time jobs available in this area and plenty of opportunities to volunteer in the community.
How much does it cost?
Sober Living is not covered by insurance so we have priced our rooms similar to apartment rentals in the area. The monthly program fee includes everything except food and personal items. We have financial assistance for those meeting the criteria.
How long do I have to be sober?
It is required that you have at least 30 days of continuous sobriety, however we will consider all applicants based on bed availability. We will not have detox capabilities.
Do you test for drugs and alcohol?
Yes. Upon admission to the house and then random. We provide testing at the house via urine and also have a breathalyzer.
What should I bring with me?
*maximum of 2 medium suitcases allowed*
Clothes, personal items, and food. Our house otherwise has a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, linens (although many choose to bring their own), towels, computer and printer, cable, Wi-Fi, TV, exercise equipment and plenty of meeting space inside and out.
Do you provide outpatient rehab and therapy at the house?
No. We have a network of partners that we can help you connect with.
Do I have to have a job?
Not necessarily, but you must be able to pay your program fee monthly and buy food. If you are not employed we expect, in addition to your meetings and therapy, you either attend classes or volunteer in the community.
Can I have my car?
Yes. Parking may be limited or off site. You must have proof of license and insurance.
What are some of the rules of the house?
Upon admission you will receive a Resident Handbook that outlines all the rules and regulations of the house. We will have you read and sign this upon approval for admission. The main rules include: absolute abstinence, curfews, house chores, and program involvement. Failure to adhere to rules will result in discharge and loss of deposit.
What about visitors?
Guests are welcome and visits are coordinated by the house leader so other residents are not imposed upon. Visitors are not allowed in bedroom areas. No overnight visitors will be permitted.
Can I smoke or vape?
Yes. There are designated smoking areas outside. When ready, we encourage and will help facilitate cessation of smoking to promote health and well-being.
How long will I need to stay?
Your length of stay is up to you and there is no minimum. 3 – 12 months is recommended, but most find at least 6 months more beneficial.
